The base form is bisque-fired first, then glazed and fired again, then painted and fired a third time. This hardens the surface and sets the color permanently.

About Kutani Ware

Kutani ware originated in the Kaga region of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture in the mid-17th century. Its defining characteristic is gosai, a palette of five overglaze enamel colors (green, yellow, purple, navy blue, and red) applied over bold painted outlines on porcelain. Production was interrupted in the late 1700s and revived in the early 19th century, giving rise to several distinct decorative styles. Today, Kutani ware remains one of Japan's most recognized ceramic traditions, with active workshops producing both traditional and contemporary designs.
